Lucid dreaming is becoming ever more popular, especially with the interest in the new film, “The Good Night,” with Penelope Cruz and Gwyneth Paltrow. Cheating on your girlfriend (like in the movie) is not the only thing to do in a lucid dream. Not by a long shot.

Here are a few more things you may be able to do in your lucid dreams, grouped by degree of difficulty. It’s normal if you find some of these especially hard or easy compared with other lucid dreamers. Everyone is different, so don’t worry about it. Try some experiences from the Easy list first, but don’t feel that you have to limit yourself.

Easy

Fly – This is one of the easiest, as flying comes naturally to many people in dreams. Experiment with different styles. There’s the airplane style, with both arms outstretched. There’s the Superman style, with one arm out and one arm back. You might even like to swim through the air using the breaststroke or dog paddle. Have fun!

Explore – But try not to get too distracted with what you find. Otherwise you’ll forget that you’re dreaming. Frequent reality checks will help. Remind yourself frequently that you’re dreaming, or ask one of your dream companions to keep reminding you.

Walk through solid objects – You’ll be able to do this if you believe that you can. You can try going through things slowly and deliberately. Or you can run right at a wall knowing that you’ll pass through to another scene entirely. Mirrors are another favorite. Think of “Alice Through the Looking Glass.”

Paint the sky – See if you can conjure up an amazing sunset. You can even create an aurora borealis, particularly if you’ve actually experienced it in real life.

Moderately Difficult

Eat as much as you want – Like exploring, it’s easy to get distracted. Remind yourself that you’re dreaming.

Meet interesting people – Create the character of someone you’ve always wanted to meet, like Einstein or Mark Twain. Just arrange a meeting and have them show up. Your imagination will take over from that point.

Search for your spirit guide – Imagine yourself on a vision quest. Ask for your spirit guide to appear. It will often take the form of an animal. Once you’ve met your spirit guide, you will be able to find it again easily.

Very Difficult

Have sex – This is certainly a popular goal for lucid dreamers, but it’s a tricky one. The excitement is likely to wake you. Try not to get too carried away, and remember that you’re dreaming.

Get creative – Some folks find that they can write poetry or music while lucid dreaming. Or you can try requesting a poem or song from your subconcious. In that case, it may appear after you’re awake.

Die – You can dream your own death, if that appeals to you. This isn’t harmful. You’re just dreaming so you won’t really die. You may experience whatever you believe lies beyond death.

This gives you some ideas for things to do in a lucid dream. Enjoy yourself!

Remember More of your Dreams

Step one is simple. Train yourself to remember more dreams. You should be remembering details of at least one dream every night before you’re ready to induce lucid dreaming.

The best way to train yourself is to keep a dream journal by your bed where you can reach it easily, even in the middle of the night. Have a pad or notebook ready, a pencil or pen, and a light you can write by.

Whenever you wake up, try to remember the dreams you were having right before you awoke. Write down as much detail as you can remember. You’ll find that the act of writing helps you to recall more. Don’t stop writing until you can’t remember anything else about your dreams.

Don’t get discouraged if you don’t recall any dreams right away. Just by telling yourself that you will remember your dreams and you will write them down, you are bound to see improvement.

Read parts of your dream journal every day, several times a day if you can. This will help you to familiarize yourself with your own dreams, and it will also help to prime your mind for remembering more dreams.

Once you’ve reached the point where you’re remembering a dream every day, or almost every day, you’re ready to continue with step 2.

The step 2 post will be added to this site in a few days. Subscribe to our feed to be notified of new posts. Bookmark this page at these sites for easy access:

Simply stated, lucid dreaming is dreaming while being aware that you are dreaming.

If you are in a lucid dream, you will usually have some power over your dream – anything from being able to fly or making an object or room appear behind a door or inside a pocket, right up to being able to change into animals and create a whole world! It is like being a director of your own movie.

Though it may seem incredible if you haven’t experienced it, lucid dreams have been scientifically proven to exist. In fact, thousands of people have been dreaming lucidly for thousands of years. It’s just not a very well known phenomenon.

That’s changing, though, with the release of the movie The Good Night, where the main character, Gary, learns to be a lucid dreamer so he can spend time with a beautiful, exciting woman (played by Penelope Cruz) who appeared in his dreams.

Being with an attractive person is just one of many fascinating things you can do in a lucid dream. Here are some other reasons you might want to try it:

Simply for fun! Flying in a lucid dream is an exhilarating feeling.

You can transform into animals or wield superpowers.

You can be a sports star, movie star, superspy, or anything else you want.

Lucid dreams are generally far more intense and vivid than most non-lucid dreams.

If you are particularly interested in dreams – either spiritually or psychologically – lucid dreaming could help you learn more.

If you’re writing fiction or even creating a world for a computer game, lucid dreaming can help you visualise it. You could ask your characters how they feel about something or what they think will happen.

Some people compose music in their lucid dreams.
